Summary
Description
When you run the software update installer, the error message appears, and you are unable to continue with the update process.
Cause
The issues is caused by a specific path parameter required by the installer, which is empty.
Resolution
There are multiple steps to this solution, which should be reviewed before continuing with the update process:
No Temp Variable defined
For Windows 10 and higher
- In the Windows search box, enter "Environment", then select the "Edit the system environment variables".
- In the popup box, use the "Environment Variables" button.
- In the lower box (system variables), look for a variable called "TEMP". If it's missing then keep going. If it's there, then let us know.
- Hit the "New" button near the bottom.
- In "Variable Name", enter "TEMP". In Variable value, enter "C:\Windows\TEMP. Hit OK. Close the Environment variables dialog (by hitting OK).
- Close and relaunch the update installer
For older versions of Windows (7, 8, etc.)
- From the desktop, right click the This PC/My Computer icon.
- Choose Properties from the context menu.
- Click the Advanced system settings link.
- Click Environment Variables... located at the bottom.
- In the section System Variables, click the "New..." button. In the Name field, enter "TEMP" and for the value field, enter "C:\Windows\TEMP".
- Select OK and close out of previous windows.
- Close and relaunch the update installer
Use different Windows profile to install update
- Should the issues persist, you can log into the computer with another user profile (e.g. Administrator) and run the same update installer.
- If the installation runs without any errors, it is an indication the user profile is corrupt, and a new user profile will need to be created and setup for the user.
Additional checks
The following should also be checked, if the error message persist:
- Confirm the software updated installer was downloaded completely, by comparing the file size mentioned on the download site.
- Check for any outstanding Windows Updates on the computer.
- Right-click on the install executable file (.exe) and select "Run as administrator".
- Ensure that you run the software installer to a local folder where the payroll application is installed. It should not be installed over a network drive.
- Reinstall Microsoft .NET 3.5 and 4.8 to ensure all components are installed.
TIP: When you create a new user profile, you will need to ensure the new profile sharing permissions must be setup (all users require full control permissions).
Suggested work-around (if the error persist)
In case the solution provided did not resolve the issue, the following work-around will allow you to update the program without running the installer.
CAUTION: The work-around does not check compatibility between the software requirements and your computer during the update process. Please ensure the computer where the update will be installed, meets the minimum system requirements.
- Request the zipped version of the software update from Customer Support - please note that you will have to confirm if you should install the 32-bit or 64-bit installation files, based on your operating systems in your environment (Update installation: Should I download and install the 32-bit or 64-bit installation file?)
- Log into the Sage Portal, and select Support > Log a Query, to request the zipped version
- The content of the zipped installer needs to be extracted to the application folder, overwriting all the existing files and folders
- The data will convert to the new version when you open the system, after extracting the files
