Rebuild data files using Command Prompt

Steps to rebuild corrupt data files using Command Prompt in Sage VIP Classic and Sage VIP Premier. Use these steps when your'e unable to access the system and don't have access to the when Support Help utilities.

Data files can become corrupt due to unforeseen events, resulting in errors such as Status 98. The rebuild function recreates indexed files to restore system functionality.

This method uses Command Prompt (also known as DOS) as an alternative to the Support Help utility.

Before you rebuild your files:

• Ensure all users have exited the payroll application before starting
• Always back up your data before performing a rebuild

1. Right-click your payroll application shortcut on the desktop and select Properties.
2. Click Open File Location.
3. Note the path in the Start in field.
   You’ll need this to go to the system folder.
4. Click the Search icon on the Windows taskbar.
5. Type CMD and select Command Prompt.
6. The default location will display as C:\Users\<username>.
7. Type cd\ and press Enter to change to C:\>.
8. If your system is on another drive, type the drive letter followed by a colon (for example, V:), then press Enter.
9. Type cd\ followed by the folder path noted earlier (for example, cd\Sage\Premier) and press Enter.
10. Type the following command and press Enter:

    vutil.exe -r -a <filename.pay>

    Replace <filename.pay> with the actual file name in your error.
11. To rebuild all data files, type:

    vutil.exe -r -a *.pay
    

The command rebuilds all files, and you can continue accessing the application and process.
