Summary
We explain why you receive Error #1009 when saving a certificate in SARS e@syFile™ Employer and how to resolve it. The article relates to submissions from Sage VIP Classic, Sage VIP Premier, and Sage Payroll Professional.
Description
The 'Cannot save certificate Error # 1009' appears when creating or amending a certificate in SARS e@syFile™ Employer. This usually occurs due to missing or invalid information in the employee profile.

The error occurs because SARS e@syFile™ Employer expects valid data but finds missing details or an invalid character in a field. These include the employee’s address field.
Resolution
Follow these steps to resolve the error:
- Check the employee’s personal details in the payroll system.
- Ensure to complete all fields, including the country code under address details, with valid information.
- Remove any invalid characters from the fields.
